Forum download speed

Postby darobison on Fri Aug 22, 2008 11:22 am

I have noticed that changing pages seems to take longer than it should on this forum. I know you're probably on a tight budget and I don't know what your website hosting is like but something I noticed was that in the source code the CSS definitions are in each page, as opposed to being in a separate file which should noticeably speed up changing from one page to another as you don't have to download that section every time if they're in the same file. There is even a comment in the source saying this.

"NOTE: These CSS definitions are stored within the main page body so that you can use the phpBB2
theme administration centre. When you have finalised your style you could cut the final CSS code
and place it in an external file, deleting this section to save bandwidth."

I believe (though possibly incorrectly) that some of the tables used could also be made with CSS instead, further decreasing the size of each page as it downloads. These improvements would make pages load faster and decrease the load on the webserver (especially important if you host it yourself or the cost is dependent on bandwidth used.)

Unfortunately, I know some HTML and very little CSS. Enough to understand it and use it somewhat but not enough to be extremely helpful other than letting you know that this is probably part of the problem. Also checking the source with an HTML validator and a CSS validator will sometimes find problems that may lead to slow loading.

Here are links to W3C's validity checkers.

http://validator.w3.org/ for HTML

I apologize if you already know this and/or I'm sounding like a jerk... I just know that I would spend more time (or actually probably less, but more enjoyable time) on this site if I didn't have to wait so long for the pages to load. I wonder how we used to deal with dial-up. I shudder even thinking of it.
