Flea Control for rabbits?

It is very important to educate yourself on the issues your bunny may face during his/her lifetime. Always contact your rabbit savvy vet before beginning any treatment.

Flea Control for rabbits?

Postby Dea on Fri May 08, 2009 6:38 am

I'm adopting a rabbit that has been living outdoors that I'm moving into my house. My mom seems to think he has to have fleas since he's been outside (in a hutch above ground). I guess I'm wondering should I just wait and find out, or is there a treatment like I use on my dogs once a month that would be a good preventative just in case. I'm calling my vet this afternoon, but I wondered what other rabbit owners did about fleas.

Thanks! I found that too, but was worried you guys knew something different. I'm going to try the Advantage once a month. He deserves to be rid of those things. And I had to treat my dogs last night. Thought I saw a flea. :( I hate fleas. I'm going after work today.

There is something called capstar...I am not sure if it is something for bunnies as well. What I do know is that it is a pill the vet uses for very infested cats or dogs. The animal gets one pill orally and within an hour or so all the fleas fall off dead. However, you still have egss on your pet so you need to continue a flea treatment like revolution or similar for three month to break the cycle.

Just got back from the vet, so I thought I'd update this thread. He has me using Advantage for cats, and gave me two syringes. I'm supposed to give the rabbit half a dose. So this 4 pack will last me 8 months.

Yeah, fleas are just terrible as we know they are with dogs and cats, and I wouldn't have thought about it actually for rabbits. But he was an outside rabbit before I adopted him, and he did scratch more. He's fine now, and you don't feel flea bites behind his ears now, so he must be more comfortable.
